"Pursuing A Dream or Combining Music, Writing & Teaching English"

(Stories from the Sea Chest or What I Wrote During Augustina Classes)

What kind of ambition do I have? Well, that’s a very good question. I guess for me, I love composing and performing music, I enjoy teaching and I have a passion for creative writing. These three worlds are interconnected and I believe mastery in one field enhances proficiency in the other.

Firstly, composing music has a lot to do with writing lyrics and connecting the author's emotions and experience with a written word on a piece of paper. It is essential that the author is open, susceptible to "extinguishing his world on the end of his quill", so to speak; this way when he reproduces his lyrics as a live performance, he can reflect and transmit his imagination and experience through the lenses of truth which will speak to the listener in a way that he (the author) relates to the world.

Secondly, creative writing can be inextricably intertwined with teaching in a way that allows you to grow, and gradually and naturally extends your ambitions.

Creative writing implies you explore both the experience under your belt and your imagination; the experience allows you to capture curiosity of the reader by letting him or her feel artistic pain, joy, tears, laughter and so on;

Imagination, on the other hand, allows the author to become a magician who can create his new imaginary world and invite the audience to participate within the artistic establishment.

Thirdly, when the author and the teacher are the same person it gives the student a frivolity to get to know both the teacher, author and the character. Which, to be honest, is my current passion because this cryptic elixir “bewitches” the student with an unlimited source of ebullience. Because students can’t get enough, they are intrigued trying to figure out 'where is the author? where is the character?' whether it’s all mixed up or simply interrelated; it is the fact that it encourages students to learn and this passion from students’ point of view is an impeccable difference between ordinary and extraordinary nature of the English lesson, which I must admit follows my current ambition to explore unorthodox ways of education.

Finally, when we combine these three worlds, - creative writing, teaching and music, that’s where the real challenge blossoms; the challenge of sharing your vision with the reader, student and the listener and getting back their passion, curiosity and full of spark and gusto eyes, eagerness to get better which, it goes without saying, makes a teacher happy.

In conclusion, there are no risks involved when you follow your heart. Your risks become your challenges; and it’s better to fail in what we love than to succeed in what we hate.
