(Stories from the Sea Chest or What I Wrote During Augustina Classes)

To begin with I think it was one of the most miserable experiences I’ve had a misfortune to encounter. When I ordered my buckwheat cereal with milk I recall it was the second spoon of my long-anticipated meal, because a waiter made me wait for 60 minutes, aggravating the hunger by cutely apologizing for mixing up the tables,

when I realized that my tooth hit the stone; you can easily imagine my reaction of anger mixed with disgust, taking into consideration the fact that, I witness pretty much on everyday bases, on tv, radio, university billboards, street ads, how wonderful and exquisite the menu, food and service in '“one of the best restaurants in our city, “Perfection”', are.

Having had a reputation as a person who doesn’t easily lose his ability to think clearly, I’ve managed to retain my composure - there was no point in making a scene; I decided to move on to the next course, which was a delicious soup with cabbage and round pieces of pork and just a splash of cultural touch of Russian cuisine,

when my eyes unmistakably detected a fly that was floating innocently between freshly cut pieces of vegetables to my horror, really, but it wasn’t the worst thing, the worst thing was that it was still alive; I remember it very vividly, like in slow motion; it was moving with its dark, thin, geometrically proportional legs.

I wanted to stand up, throw the napkin on the floor, push over the table, leave the restaurant and never come back here again, but then I remembered this saying that for some people the glass at all times is half empty, while for others, it is always half full. So I decided to think it over—toying with the ideas in my mind’s eye —what positive prospect I could come up with and how to use this situation to grow.

Then I remembered that I have a client who always publicly and shamelessly criticizes, without any specific reason behind, my quirky English teaching techniques. And then the solution came - a Christmas card, with an invitation for my beloved client, to the “Perfection”, arguably, one of the best restaurants in our city, with paid, in advance, dinner.
