“Friends, Are They Coming Back?”

It seems everybody knows the popular tv series Friends-one of the best ensemble works over the last few decades, where the characters & the plot drive each other flawlessly. A smartly made romantic comedy that can resonate with almost everyone who ever felt lonely in a big city—shows us that friendship, in many ways like love, is all we need.

The characters are distinctive & complement each other in literally every scene, making the audience wait for more in queasy anticipation.

Ross & Rachel, a couple which many can relate to, due to their “on & off” nature which is not only logically realistic but also comes from the diversity of misused personal situations.

Ross, a geeky, in his nature, university teacher with a pathological desire to rationalize literally every little thing in a relationship. Sensitive, open-minded, dinosaur-friendly, he is a well-thought-of protagonist of Rachel’s, his girlfriend, who, on the contrary, has a tendency to overdramatize everything from her wrongly done nails to the not so luckily cooked dinner, which turns out to be a combination of pudding & beef according to the book with pages stuck together, misleading her into creating the hilarious mood the whole program is quite notorious for.

Chandler & Monica, the contrast between a sarcastic sense of humour used as a self-defense mechanism & pragmatic, down-to-earth, in a way, almost controlling approach used by the latter adds a bit of flavour into a well-cooked delicious meal of the show.

And Joey & Phoebe-who have an exceptional talent to go from one relationship to another without any feelings of loss, disappointment or sadness we usually tend to exercise after breakups, which is quite refreshing contrast to the other two couples.

The writing is excellent & makes us wonder how the authors manage to combine such a realistic approach to building a dialog with genuine romance & hilarious situations which characters always seem to put themselves into. The program was so popular that there had always been rumours of new episodes despite the long stretch of absence from the mainstream angle of visibility.

I think the likelihood of the reunion is improbable—the characters’ maturity, mobile phones & global warming—people face new challenges now,& new series would have to be a departure from their original philosophy; although, there’s no denying that it would be truly eye-catching to see new works of the group.

Now, I think their phenomenal success even 19 years later dictates an unwanted answer—this success is going to be almost impossible to replicate; the actors & writers will not be indulging us, the audience, in our wishful thinking.

Having said that, it is always a treat to revisit the episodes & experience those feelings again, something we felt when we watched the series in the first place. Friends, are they coming back?, yes, but only through our retrospective perception of the good old days.
