"English - The Reason Behind The Motivation" (How does it work?)

Updated: Nov 16, 2023

At the very beginning of the lesson a teacher asks a student a question that has a direct association with what has been going on in the teacher's life currently, without telling the student about this connection (although it can be revealed later) and they start to discuss this topic.

For instance, if a teacher has a challenging time finding what motivates him at this stage of his life, he might ask a student to share his or her view on the situation when a person tries to find this something that he or she is meant to do in life.

And because this question is directly connected with what the teacher has been going through in his life currently, the student will feel an extra relevance and will be sharing his or her view based on something that is practically relevant and important to him as well.

Because of this relevance English becomes not the priority #1 but priority #2, and this discussion becomes, in a way, the equivalent of a real practical situation when interlocutors are focused on the content and solution of the subject—intentionally or intuitively, brought up in a conversation—rather than the form (language),

which is one of the best ways to study English because it is very much like being in an English-speaking country trying to meet real challenges in real life.

The teacher may introduce a story which lets the subject further evolution. A story, I believe, which triggers eloquence of the discussion and brings new ideas and details into focus.

So let me ask a question - when a student comes to the lesson, what do you think he or she is interested in the most? The answer is obvious - a student himself or herself. Another question pops up in the mind - what is the thing that captures the teacher’s attention, motivates and lifts up his guts? The answer is - the teacher himself.

And this is a very practical concept to absorb, because if we understand that a teacher and a student are primarily self-centered, we can apply this concept in a way that will greatly influence the students’ natural acquisition of the language.
